Mohawk Girls Launch

Montreal (November 5, 2014) Finding love is hard. Finding yourself is even harder… especially when your family, friends and everyone in town has an opinion! New series Mohawk Girls follows four dynamic 20-somethings as they try to figure out what it means to be a modern-day Mohawk woman. Like all young women looking to make their mark in the world, they face the challenge of balancing family tradition and acceptance in their community with the intoxicating freedom of new experiences – only with an added level of difficulty: finding love and happiness in a small town where everybody has dated everybody.

Filmed and set in Montreal and the Kahnawake Mohawk Territory in Quebec, the 13-episode half-hour dramedy premieres Sunday, Nov. 23 on OMNI 1 with back-to-back episodes airing weekly at 9 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. ET, and Tuesday, Nov. 25 at 9 p.m. ET on APTN.

Mohawk Girls is a comedic look at the lives of four modern-day women trying to stay true to their roots while they navigate sex, work, love, and the occasional throw down. This is life on the reserve like you’ve never seen it before – modern, tough, and funny. Depicting many of the same conflicts experienced by all Canadian cultures, Mohawk Girls highlights the struggle to find a balance between love, romance and identity on one hand, and preserving a culture on the other. Bailey (Jenny Pudavick) wants to be the “perfect” Mohawk, but she’s ready to see what life beyond the “rez” feels like. Caitlin (Heather White) craves love from all the wrong men, including her absent dad and bad-boy boyfriend. Type-A Zoe (Brittany LeBorgne) is driven by the need to succeed while serving her community, but she’s got a secret, kinky, side to her. Anna (Maika Harper), the newcomer to the “rez”, has a Mohawk father and a white mother and is having a hard time figuring out the rules in Kahnawake. It’s Sex and the City – Mohawk style!

The dynamic cast includes Jenny Pudavick (Cashing In) and newcomers Brittany LeBorgne, Heather White, and Maika Harper in the lead roles. Rounding out the friends and family surrounding this foursome: Meegwun Fairbrother (Helix)Kyle Nobess (Todd And The Book Of Pure Evil), Rachelle White Wind (Moccasin Flats), Glen Gould(Da Vinci’s City Hall)Devery Jacobs (Rhymes For Young Ghouls)Tantoo Cardinal (Dances With Wolves, Legends of the Fall), and Alain Chanoine (The Amazing Race Canada).

Viewers can delve even deeper into the world of Mohawk Girls via the interactive website, featuring in-character Vlogs and web-exclusive video content. New-to-the-rez character Anna plays a central role online, acting as a bridge to life on the rez for non-Aboriginal audiences through her Vlog, “Rez Chick.”

Mohawk Girls is created and directed by Gemini Award-winning Tracey Deer (Club Native), who also serves as executive producer. The series is inspired by Deer’s 2005 acclaimed feature-length documentary of the same name, about the trials and tribulations of teenage girls growing up on the Mohawk reserve of Kahnawake. Cynthia Knight (Sophie) is the showrunner and co-executive producer. The series is produced by Rezolution Pictures’ Christina Fon, Linda Ludwick and Catherine Bainbridge and executive produced by Catherine Bainbridge, Ernest Webb, Christina Fon and Linda Ludwick, the same team that produced the multiple-Gemini and Peabody Award-winning film, Reel Injun. Innovate By Day is the Digital Media Producer.
