Historical docu-drama about Cree explorer, George Elson.
The Last Explorer is a historical documentary about the famous American Hubbard expeditions through wilderness Labrador in 1903 and 1905 - adventure, starvation, forbidden love and death - told through the POV of the Cree trapper who guided them.
The Last Explorer is Cree filmmaker Neil Diamond's journey through Northeastern Canada to retrace the steps of his great uncle, George Elson, who led the team to map Labrador over a hundred years ago. Along the way Diamond discovers rumours of revenge, lost diaries, and forbidden love.
It combines interviews with historians, archival photographs and archival stock footage, present-day footage of Labrador scenery and of the film-maker's visits to New York City and to the Memorial University archives, and re-enactments of events from 1903 and 1905. George Elson guided Mrs Mina Hubbard through Labrador on an expedition in 1905 to reach Ungava Bay and map the unchartered interior of Labrador. Two years before, Elson guided American journalist Leonidas Hubbard, Mrs Hubbard’s husband, and lawyer Dillon Wallace on another expedition with the same objective, although it was unsuccessful and cost Hubbard his life. On the 1903 expedition many decisions were made that ignored the Métis’ advice
